Although we have not yet come to a time when we can say that all threats from COVID 19 have passed, I believe that we have come to a point at which our members who are not at elevated risk can return to Mass. Therefore, beginning this coming Sunday, August 1st, I am removing the temporary dispensation from the Sunday Mass Obligation.
As always, this obligation will apply to Catholics that are of the age of reason and in reasonably good health. Those who have a contagious illness, those who are generally confined because of age or other disabilities and those who face extraordinary obstacles that make it practically impossible to attend Mass on a Sunday are not obliged to do so. For those in such categories it is not a sin to miss Mass, although it is sad that they are unable to attend.
I would like to urge you to come back, not grudgingly, but joyfully. The Lord and the People of God in your parish community look forward to having you back. As helpful as the Sunday Mass on television has been, it is no replacement for those who are able to come. Jesus Christ is present with a special power and clarity whenever the Church gathers. Christ is ready to lead you in the worship of His Heavenly Father and to feed you with His Body and Blood.

Aunque todavía no hemos llegado a un momento en el que podamos decir que todas las amenazas de COVID 19 han pasado, creo que hemos llegado a un punto en el que nuestros miembros que no corren un riesgo elevado pueden volver a la misa. Por lo tanto, a partir de este próximo domingo, 1 de agosto, voy a retirar la dispensa temporal de la misa dominical obligatoria.
Como siempre, esta obligación se aplicará a los Católicos que tengan la edad de la razón y una salud razonablemente buena. No están obligados a hacerlo los que tienen una enfermedad contagiosa, los que están generalmente confinados a causa de la edad o de otras discapacidades y los que se enfrentan a obstáculos extraordinarios que hacen prácticamente imposible asistir a la Misa en domingo. Para los que se encuentran en estas categorías no es un pecado faltar a la Misa, aunque es triste que no puedan asistir.
Me gustaría animarlos a volver, no a regañadientes, sino con alegría. El Señor y el Pueblo de Dios de su comunidad parroquial esperan que vuelva. Por muy útil que haya sido la misa dominical por televisión, no es un sustituto para los que pueden venir. Jesucristo está presente con una fuerza y una claridad especiales siempre que la Iglesia se reúne. Cristo está dispuesto a guiarnos en la adoración de su Padre Celestial y a alimentarnos con su Cuerpo y su Sangre.
